Winter Wonderland: See the Best Photos from the First Storm of the Season in NorCal

“Oh the weather outside is frightful…”

I know Frank Sinatra was trying to illustrate a cold winter day with that line from Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow! but it’s clear that he’s never spent a beautiful winter day in Northern California.

With the first storm of the year covering the NorCal mountains with magical white gold, it may be the most gorgeous time of year. High elevation areas have reported up to 20 inches of snow from the storm this past weekend. It’s difficult to say whether this type of weather will continue this winter (let’s hope so) but as we’re living in the moment, let’s enjoy its beauty.

Here are the best photos of the storms from all the different areas of Northern California:

Tahoe

Mount Shasta

Lassen

I experienced many new things while hiking the Chaos Crags trail in Lassen. The unusual silence of snow and the awe-inspiring sense of aloneness with each step into untouched white. Fear I've lost the trail followed by complete relief once I spot the yellow marker again. A sense of accomplishment knowing only my snow prints led to the volcanic crater below Chaos Crags today. Serenity watching trees cast shadows and the sun create a cotton candy cloud. Gratitude I just missed the storm rolling over the mountains. Slight but still very real concern about river otter attacks while finishing my hike around Manzanita Lake. And lastly, happiness and appreciation, despite cold toes and fingers, that I had this experience. #chaoscrags #chaoscragstrail #manzanitalake #lassennationalpark #riverotter
