Winter Storm Warning: Over 8 Feet of Snow Forecast for NorCal this Weekend
After numerous large storms brought wet weather and feet of snow to Northern California during January, we finally experienced a sunny weekend. But when the calendar turns from January to February, that weather is set to return and bring with it a winter storm warning and feet of snow to the mountains.
Winter has returned!
The National Weather Service is forecasting feet of snow in the mountains, including up to 100 inches of snow in Lassen Volcanic National Park from Friday night through Sunday.
The snow will mostly be seen in the high elevations above 6,000 feet, but later in the storm could drop to 2,500 feet. Meanwhile, the valley floor will see its share of wet weather with some areas forecast to see 4 inches of rain.
Travel will be difficult in Northern California all weekend. Expect travel delays everywhere, most significantly in the mountain areas where chains will most likely be required at high-elevation passes.
The wind is also expected to play a significant role in this storm, with areas experiencing winds up to 45 mph. Gusts on peaks in the Sierra Nevada could see winds up to 70 mph.
While this weekend will see nasty weather, Monday evening will open back up to clear skies through the week. Next week will be perfect for skiing or waterfall hunting in Northern California.
