Below is a press release from the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area:
We are saddened to report the drowning of a male visitor at Judge Francis Carr Powerhouse late Saturday. Rangers and visitors successfully rescued a female visitor. Two dogs caught in the turbulent currents below the powerhouse eventually made it to shore.
Visitors are reminded to keep pets on leash within the national recreation area. Visitors and pets are also reminded to stay out of the water in and around Carr Powerhouse. Swimming, wading, and boating are not allowed in this location because the high volume of water flowing into Whiskeytown Lake at Carr Powerhouse creates an extremely dangerous undertow. This danger was unfortunately realized on Saturday.
“One drowning in the lake is one too many,” notes Park Superintendent Josh Hoines. “To ensure a positive and safe experience, please abide by park signage, rules, and regulations.”
