VIDEO: Surfer Paddles Into Biggest Wave Ever at Mavericks

It’s been one heck of a week at Mavericks in Half Moon Bay as the waves are reaching larger than 40 feet and some of the world’s best big-wave surfers are along for the ride.

With waves towering to the size of city buildings, most surfers use a tow-in to catch the otherwise impossible waves. There was one surfer this week who paddled into one of these massive waves and surfing aficionados are calling it the largest wave ever paddled into at Mavericks.

Grant “Twiggy” Baker is no stranger to Mavericks, winning the legendary (and now defunct) contest in January 2014. Now, without judges to score his epic run, Twiggy paddled into what looked to be a 50-foot wave. Surfers and photographers on the scene are calling it the largest ever paddled into at Mavericks.

Here’s the video from the wave:

That’s one of the scariest waves you can try to ride, illustrated by Twiggy’s complete annihilation at the end. It was one for the history books.

Mavericks is the world-renown surfing spot located in Half Moon Bay, just south of San Francisco off of Highway 1. This week’s conditions brought 40-foot waves to the legendary big-waving surfing location and elite surfers traveled from all over to experience the swells of a lifetime.

After strong winter storms in the Pacific Ocean, Mavericks can see waves anywhere between 25 and 60 feet. It is a very dangerous spot for surfers, known to have taken the lives of famous surfers Mark Foo and Sion Milosky. The Mavericks Surf Contest, known to attract the best big-wave surfers on the planet, was cancelled indefinitely in 2019 due to a bevy of logistical challenges and tough surf conditions over the past 2 years.
