Forest Service officials have announced the closure of the Trinity Alps Wilderness, including all trails and recreational areas, until November 15 due to the River Complex Fire.

The River Complex Fire, which includes at least 22 fires totaling more than 30,000 acres, is located in the Salmon/Scott River Ranger District of the Klamath National Forest. The lightning-caused complex has brought evacuations orders to Cecilville, Summerville and Petersburg, with warnings in place for Sawyers Bar, Coffee Creek past Sugar Pine Campground in Trinity County.

“Smoke continues to impact the region, particularly in the steeper drainages and complex terrain. Until the inversion and smoke lifts, low to moderate fire behavior is observed. As conditions warm and as the predicted dry thunderstorms move through, fire behavior is expected to increase,” read an update from the Forest Service.

The Trinity Alps Wilderness, which is a world-renown wilderness area just west of Redding, will stay closed through some of its peak fall seasons. There are also closures in the Marble Mountain and Russian Wildernesses and the forest within the Salmon/Scott River Ranger District.

It seems fire season will put a halt to many of the Northern California backpacking trips this year.
