The early-season snowfall has been a delightful surprise throughout Northern California. As another storm brought over a foot of snow to the Sierra this week, one Tahoe ski resorts is set to open on Friday, but operations will look a lot different than in years past.

Northstar California Resort will become the first resort in Tahoe to begin running its lifts in the age of Covid and for anybody lucky enough to get on the mountain in the following two weeks, you’ll have plenty of room to make big turns. Right now, the resort is only taking reservations for Epic Pass holders, who can reserve their dates and times online to avoid overcrowding at the resort. Regular day tickets to the resort won’t be available until December 8.

For opening day, the Northstar will only open Lumber Jack, Skid Trail and Upper and Lower Main Street to the public. There will be no indoor dining options, but grab and go food and outdoor seating will be available.

It’s a difficult time for ski resorts who sometimes see huge crowds in the winter. While much of the activity at the resort remains outside, resorts have pledged to limit the number of people on a lift chair and indoor operations will be suspended. That means that plenty of people could be gathering in large groups at the base of the mountain, a big problem in the Covid era.

As the snow falls and creates a base on the mountain, they will be able to open more of the resort and accommodate more visitors. Until then, skiing at a resort in Tahoe will only be experienced by a lucky few.
