South Lake Tahoe Police Conduct Door-to-Door Evacuations as Caldor Fire Approaches

The Caldor Fire made a strong run towards South Lake Tahoe overnight as evacuations expanded throughout the region, calling for mandatory evacuations in Meyers and currently a warning (as of 5 am Monday) in South Lake Tahoe. With the region’s notorious lack of roadways leaving the city, South Lake Tahoe police are getting ahead of the issue by going door-to-door evacuating locals.

Late Sunday night, the flames moved over Echo Summit and into the Desolation Wilderness, allowing residents of Meyers to see the fire in person for the first time:

With increasing worry about traffic issues when a mandatory evacuation could be announced, police began to evacuate residents early, telling them that this was the best time to leave:

On Sunday night, the fire ripped through the elevated areas above South Lake Tahoe, with Twin Bridges seeing significant loss:

CalFire released its updated evacuation orders on Sunday night, calling for mandatory evacuations just east of Echo Summit, including areas of Meyers and the entire Desolation Wilderness. The evacuations also put the entire southern region of Tahoe on edge as the tourist-favorite town of South Lake Tahoe, with its more than 20,000 residents, have now all been warned that a mandatory evacuation could be coming soon.

El Dorado County
Desolation Wilderness from the watershed ridge to the CA ENF/CA TMU wilderness boundary.
From the El Dorado/Placer county line to Echo Lakes.


Alpine County
Highway 89 south, from Luther Pass Road to the Pickets Junction (Highway 88). West on
Highway 88 to Kirkwood. South to include Kirkwood Ski Resort and Caples Lake.


Evacuation Warning:

El Dorado County
The remaining area of the Lake Tahoe Basin. From the Alpine/El Dorado county line, north along
the California/Nevada state line to Lake Tahoe. North along the waters edge to the El
Dorado/Placer county line. West along the El Dorado/Placer county line to McKinney Lake.

Alpine County
Highway 88 at Forestdale Road. West of Forestdale Road and south to the Pacific Crest Trail
Crossing. West of the Pacific Crest Trail to the Summit City Canyon Trail. West of Summit City
Canyon Trail and south to the El Dorado / Stanislaus National Forest Line. El Dorado / Stanislaus
National Forest Line west to the Alpine and Amador County line.
South of Armstrong Summit to Woodfords to Forestdale Road, north of Highway 88 and Highway
89 to Armstrong Summit.
