Power Outage Leaves Skiers Stranded at Heavenly Ski Resort

For many Weekend Warriors, the President’s Day weekend was an opportunity to head up to Tahoe to experience some of the more than 200 inches of snow that’s fallen on the area in February. With blizzard conditions prevalent, many were urged not to make the trip.

For those who chose to make the trek up to Heavenly Ski Resort on Sunday, they didn’t get the winter wonderland vacation they’d hoped for. The blizzard forced a power outage at Heavenly around 1 pm, closing down the mountain and stranding hundreds of skiers who chose to ride the Gondola down to the village. A video of the scene was posted to social media:

It was an unfortunate event for the resort and the skiers who spent their 3-day vacation there. The storm peaked in the afternoon and the resort received 31 inches of snow in a 24 hour span. The resort had to return skiers down the mountain via a power generator.

There are ways you can ski down from the location of the Gondola, but it could be a difficult ride for beginner riders.

If the stranded skiers chose to stick around for another day, the skies are clearing Monday and it looks like it’s going to be one of the best powder days the resort has seen in a decade. There’s always a silver lining.
