Over 2-Feet of Snow Forecast to Fall on NorCal Mountains this Weekend

Another week in 2019, another storm…

It’s been a historic snow season in Northern California, with 7 Tahoe ski resorts seeing over 600 inches of snow. As we transition from winter to spring, it’s been more of the same, and a new storm set to hit NorCal is about to dump a couple more feet of snow on the mountains.

From Thursday through Saturday, up to 30 inches of snow is forecast to hit Lassen Park, with Tahoe mountains seeing up to a foot. The warmer storm will bring snow levels down to 6,000 feet.

Meanwhile, up to 3 inches of rain could hit some communities in that time causing flood concerns, especially in the scarred areas of the Carr, Hirz and Delta Fires.

The storm will likely cause significant travel delays, especially in high-elevation areas. Expect chain controls on the Tahoe summits and maybe even some flood closures in the valley.

With the historic snow comes delayed closures at ski resorts. The Vail resorts in Tahoe have already announced extended seasons, and Squaw Valley Resort, which leads the Tahoe mountains in snowfall, will stay open well into the summer. With more snow on the horizon, spring skiing is set to last at least another month.

The rain is becoming so much of an issue, that the Oroville Dam spillway is flowing this week for the first time since it was rebuilt following its collapse in 2017. As waters run high on Lake Oroville, flows could reach up to 60,000 cfs this week.

It looks like winter doesn’t want to go away. We could see more storms like this throughout April.
