NASA Releases Satellite Images of Crazy Sierra Nevada Snowpack

It’s been a snowy winter so far in Northern California and there is no better way to illustrate the increased snowpack then by satellite imagery. NASA released a photo comparing this year’s Norther California snowpack to the same date in 2018. The difference was astounding.

Here is what the snowpack looked like on February 15, 2018:

And here’s what it looks like on February 11, 2019:

“The Sierra Nevada is really living up to its name “snowy mountain range” this year,” NASA wrote on Twitter. “With snow reports coming in feet & snow storms still moving in, it’s now home to the snowiest ski resort in the U.S.”

This February has seen record snowfall in Northern California, which will have a lasting effect on water storage and wildfires through the coming year. The National Weather Service reports that California snowpack is currently 146 percent of average for this time of year.
