Napa Man Breaks California Record with 2,175-Pound Pumpkin

At the Half Moon Bay World Championship Weigh-Off, big pumpkins are a familiar sight. But when Napa pumpkin grower Leonardo Urena walked in with his 2,175 pound pumpkin, no one had ever seen one that big.

Urena’s massive pumpkin not only landed him $15,225 in prize money, but it also grabbed him the California record.

A spokesman for the contest says the pumpkin was the second biggest recorded during the 46 years of the competition. A pumpkin from Washington won in 2017 with an astounding weight of nearly 2,400 pounds.

This is the second time Urena grabbed the top prize in the pumpkin growing competition, winning in 2011 as well. He claims his verbal encouragement of his pumpkins, including telling them that he’s proud of this, is one of his secrets to getting to their massive size.
