Most Tahoe Ski Resorts are Closing this Weekend

As Easter weekend approaches and the warm temperatures move into Northern California, most Tahoe ski resorts are preparing to close.

Even with high snowpack from the historic winter, Northstar, Sugar Bowl, Sierra at Tahoe, Kirkwood, Boreal, Homewood, Soda Springs and Diamond Peak are all closing this weekend, using Easter Sunday as their final day. It’s a bittersweet moment after a snowy winter that exceeded all expectations for skiers and snowboarders.

Sugar Bowl saw one of the best winters in the country with 624 inches of snowfall, while Boreal, Northstar, Homewood and Kirkwood all exceeded 600 inches on the season. Those five resorts were in the top 10 of overall snowfall of any ski resorts in the United States this winter.

Each resort will host its share of winter closing festivities, with a bevy of Easter egg hunts and pond skim competitions on the docket. With sunny skies in the forecast, you can’t go wrong at any of the resorts this weekend.

Meanwhile, a few Tahoe ski resorts are using their massive snowpack to stay open for a while longer. Mt. Rose will close its operations on April 28. Heavenly Resort will run their full lift operations until April 28, then they will move to weekend skiing until May 27.

But the one Tahoe resort that still has a lot more skiing left, mostly due to it seeing the most snowfall in the country (683 inches) this winter, is Squaw Valley. The resort has a closing date of July 7 and is likely to run most of its lifts until then.

Here’s to a great 2018-19 winter season!
