Interstate 5 Closed Near Shasta Lake Due to Heavy Snowfall

Just as meteorologists predicted, temperatures dropped and rain turned to snow at low elevations in Northern California on Wednesday, forcing the closure of southbound Interstate 5 near Shasta Lake due to heavy snowfall.

Big rigs were seen pulled over along the side of the road near Lakehead as the snow began to fall heavily on Wednesday. The revelation forced CalTrans to close the road until further notice.

CalTrans webcams show a snowy scene all around the Shasta Lake area, a rare occurrence maybe seen once or twice a year. Based on webcam images, it seems the snow is prevalent and traffic limited from the Pit River Bridge all the way to Yreka. Here are some images of the roadway:
