To celebrate National Public Lands Day, all National Parks in the country are free on September 26. If you feel like doing a little volunteering in Lassen Volcanic National Park that day, you can also receive an entrance pass for any federal public land for use at a later date. It’s a win-win!

Established in 1994 and held annually on the fourth Saturday in September, National Public Lands Day is traditionally the nation’s largest single-day volunteer effort. It celebrates the connection between people and green space in their community, inspires environmental stewardship, and encourages use of open space for education, recreation, and health benefits.

In Lassen, they will be performing a Wayside Cleaning event throughout the park, where visitors can pick up a cleaning kit at the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center or Loomis Museum and clean one or more waysides along the park highway. When you return the kit, you’ll receive a free entrance pass for any federal public land for use at a later date.

Volunteers can pick up a cleaning kit between 10 am and 4 pm at Lassen’s visitors centers and select a wayside along the park highway. All cleaning supplies are non-toxic and can be returned to either end of the park on your way home. This self-led activity is appropriate for visitors of all ages.

National Public Lands Day includes free access to National Parks across the country, just remember that some restrictions are in place at some parks across Northern California due to wildfire risk and smoke. Please check with each individual park to see what’s open before visiting.
