Flash Flood Watch Issued in Fire Scarred Areas of Shasta County

With torrential rains continuing to push through Northern California, officials are on high alert for flooding in the fire scarred regions. In response to the concerns, the National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch in the scarred areas of the Carr, Delta and Hirz Fires.

The NWS Sacramento took to Twitter to announce its warning:

“This is a dangerous situation. If you observe movement of soils,
debris, or large amounts of water you should move to higher
ground and away from the burn area immediately,” the NWS said in a warning. “Residents, recreators, and persons traveling or working within and downslope of the Carr-Hirz-Delta Fire Burn Areas, need to be alert for the potential of mud and debris flows.”

The Delta, Hirz and Carr Fires all burned during the devastating 2018 fire season in Shasta County, with all three fires covering a combined 350,000 acres in the region. The area under flood watch mostly sits in the Shasta Trinity National Forest surrounding Shasta Lake, along with the entire area of Whiskeytown National Recreation Area.

The Flash Flood Watch is in effect at noon on Wednesday and will last through midnight. Officials are warning people to be aware of their surroundings and watch out for moving debris and possible mudslides.
