It was Adrew Machi’s 39th birthday when he visited the Luffenholtz Beach near Trinidad with his family from the Bay Area on Friday. Tragically, he was swept out to sea by a “sneaker wave” and a search team later found his body.

According to the family’s GoFundMe page, Machi was swept into the water by a large wave while fishing and was unable to be saved.

“Drew was fishing on the rocks and A wave grabbed him and threw him in the ocean. Brandie jumped in and tried to save him but he was about 15 feet out and the water was throwing her back into the rocks. She ran for help but he died,” said the page.

A large-scale rescue mission was immediately deployed to the area with a helicopter, rescue boats and swimmers from the U.S. Coast Guard and Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. A swimmer eventually found Machi’s body, which authorities believe had hit his head on the rocks during the incident.
