Cowabunga! Storm Brings Surfing to Lake Tahoe

High winds hit Northern California this week, sending waves to descend on the shores of Lake Tahoe and enabling a surfer to get a rare ride on winter swells.

Extreme athlete Kaesen Suyderhoud, who is a professional wakeboarder and spends his winters snowboarding the slopes of Tahoe, used the rare winds to go full cowabunga on Tahoe waves this week.

While surfing in Lake Tahoe is rare, it’s certainly not a new phenomenon. Wind in Tahoe typically picks up in the fall months, usually September, and creates big waves on the lake.

Of course, anybody who wants to experience the swells at 6,200 feet must stay prepared for windy weather, but we have photos and video to proves it’s not a fluke:

If you’re going to surf Lake Tahoe, just make sure it bring a wetsuit. It’s cold out there!
