Chilly Temperatures Allow NorCal Ski Resorts to Begin Snowmaking for the Upcoming Season

The temperatures dropped throughout Northern California this week, giving way to single digits in areas of the Sierra Nevada. For many, this is an indication of the fall and subsequent winter months to come in NorCal. For ski resorts, this means it’s time to start making some white gold.

Resorts all around the Tahoe and Mammoth regions announced the beginning of snowmaking operations this week, a welcomed sight with ski season around the corner. Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows was already blowing snow on October 15, and were joined this past weekend by Northstar California Resort, Heavenly Ski Resort and Mammoth Mountain.

It’s certainly early for snowmaking in any season and many resorts already have a plane to open for the 2020/21 season. Mammoth Mountain is planning for a November 14th open date, while Northstar California and Heavenly are planning on November 20th. Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, who recently announced they will be changing their name in the coming years, plans to open on November 25th.

Although the Covid-19 pandemic looks like it will continue to be around during the beginning of the upcoming ski season, resorts have assured they will still be able to provide a top-notch product. With the slopes perfectly designed for social distancing, the only changes most visitors will see is indoors at the lodge and other facilities.
