Castle Crags State Park is a popular area for outdoor adventurers just north of Redding along Interstate 5. Now, following more than 2 months of being open since the Covid closure, the park will once again be closed to the public due to a surge in visitation.

“Due to the recent visitation surges at this unit, the park is again temporarily closing vehicular access, meaning there is no camping, parking facilities, or vehicular use of park roadways until further notice. All restrooms are closed,” the park said in a statement.

The announcement come as outdoor destinations across the country are dealing with added visitors during the Covid-19 pandemic, bringing extra trash and crowds to the pristine areas. While much of Castle Crags will be closed, locals will still be able to use the park during the day via hiking or bike.

“The park will be open for locals who can walk or bike in for trail or day-use,” said park officials.

Castle Crags is one of the most popular outdoor areas in Northern California, but sits in an area surrounded by small communities. Towns like Dunsmuir and Castella have seen increases in visitors during the pandemic, which has caused the locals to grow concerned about a local spread of the virus.
