Camping Prohibited in 5 Northern California National Forests Due to Wildfire Risk

Creek Fire in the Sierra National Forest

The National Forest Service has taken the astounding approach of prohibiting camping in five National Forests in Northern California due to extreme wildfire danger effective on Tuesday, September 8.

Under this order, all camping is closed in the Eldorado National Forest, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, Lassen National Forest, Plumas National Forest and Tahoe National Forest except in wilderness areas and within 500 feet of the Pacific Crest Trail. This order also includes a temporary fire ban that prohibits all campfires regardless of ignition source or location.

“These are extreme circumstances,” said Forest Supervisor Jeff Marsolais. “We have a Red Flag wind event in the forecast with vegetation conditions that are as flammable as they were during the 2014 King Fire. That fire ran 15 miles and burned over 50 thousand acres in a single day. Resources will be scarce with so many other large wildfires in California right now.”

Forest Service officials will continue to reevaluate the conditions throughout the week to determine whether camping will reopen.
