In a drastic move inspired by growing visitation numbers in lieu of California’s shelter-in-place mandate, California State Parks has closed vehicle access to its 280 parks in the state. The move now leaves little opportunities for outdoor adventurers in the state looking to find relief from staying home due to the spread of the Coronavirus.

“On Saturday, many state parks once again experienced visitation surges that made it impossible for the public to implement appropriate social/ physical distancing practices. During this pandemic disease, every person has a role to play in slowing down the spread of COVID-19. Protecting individuals, families and communities comes down to common sense,” California State Parks said in a statement.

The move follows significant park closures throughout the state including Lassen Volcanic National Park, Yosemite National Park and Point Reyes National Seashore. And California State Parks is considering further action if visitation numbers don’t subside.

“State Parks will continue to monitor visitation and physical distancing at all state park units, and if the safety measures implemented thus far are not sufficient to protect public health, additional measures may be taken to fully close parks, including trails, bathrooms and other amenities.”
