A man and his three nephews recently took a trip from Sacramento to Shasta Lake to enjoy a fun day on a boat. The day unfortunately ended with a dangerous boat crash on shore, leaving one person injured.

Usman Khalid, 34, rented a boat from Holiday Harbor Marina on August 1 with his nephews. While heading back to the marina at the end of the day, Khalid reached down to grab his sunglasses and ended up crashing 37 feet up the shore near the McCloud arm. One of Khalid’s nephews experienced minor injuries in the crash.

Khalid told sheriff’s deputies that he had never operated a boat before and had never taken any boating classes. A California Boaters Education card is mandatory for all recreational boat operators between the ages of 16-35.

While the accident thankfully didn’t result in further injury, it’s a lesson for boat operators to be fully aware of your surroundings while on the lake.
