Avalanche Reported on Mount Shasta that was ‘At Least a Hundred Yards’

With the brunt of the winter storm arriving on Mount Shasta, avalanche conditions have been high on the mountain. When splitboarders hiked up Gray Butte on Thursday afternoon, they found evidence of a D2 avalanche triggered earlier in the day.

The Mount Shasta Avalanche Center posted the evidence of the avalanche on social media, showing a decent-sized wall of snow from where the avalanche was triggered:

“Today on an east facing aspect near treeline on Gray Butte, a good size D2 cornice triggered storm slab with a crown 1-3 feet deep occurred mid afternoon,” wrote Shasta Avalanche on Instagram. “It’s unknown how far wide it propagated, though it was at least a hundred yards in each direction from our location. It appeared the slab failed at the new/old snow interface.”

On Friday, avalanche danger on the mountain remained considerable. If you plan on going up to the mountain, please check with the Mt. Shasta Avalanche Center before you go.
