4.7 Magnitude Earthquake Near Truckee Marks the Tenth in Tahoe Over 2 Weeks

At approximately 9:35 pm on Thursday, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake shook the mountains of the Sierra Nevada just north of Truckee. The quake was felt throughout different communities in Northern California.

The earthquake is part of a series of shaking that occurred in the region recently, including two earthquakes measuring in at 3.2 and 3.1 near Truckee on Wednesday night. On April 21st, there were 5 earthquakes located in the center Lake Tahoe in 21 minutes, ranging between 1.9 and 3.91. There have been 10 notable earthquakes in the Tahoe region over the past two week.

There are three major fault lines that run under Lake Tahoe, including the West Tahoe Fault, Stateline Fault and Incline Village Fault. Early indications say that this earthquake was along the West Tahoe Fault, the same as the M6 earthquake that rattled the area in 1966.
