At 8:13 am Friday Humboldt residents received a nice morning jolt in the form of a 3.9 magnitude earthquake. The epicenter was located just south of Ferndale along the coast.

Although the earthquake was relatively small, it gave residents a nice pick-me-up on Friday morning.

“Nice early morning earthquake in Humboldt,” wrote Donald Bickle on Twitter.

Ferndale is a beautiful coastal town about 25 miles south of Eureka, which is the home of famed movie sets such as The Majestic and Outbreak. It’s also the frequent receiver of earthquakes, although none too damaging lately.

The North Coast has a history of tsunamis in the area due to its proximity of the active geological area of the nearby Mendocino Triple Junction, which is the confluence of the San Andreas Fault and Cascadia Subduction Zone. In 1964, Crescent City had a tsunami that killed 12 people and caused $15 million in damage.
