15 More Earthquakes Shake-Up Area Near Mount Shasta

Yesterday we reported five earthquakes that had hit near Mount Shasta, just north of McCloud, over Labor Day weekend including a 2.7 magnitude earthquake that shook homes. Since yesterday afternoon, a bunch more earthquakes were detected in the same area, including nine quakes over magnitude 2.0.

According to Earthquake Track, 15 more earthquakes were recorded in the same area since the initial cluster on Sunday and Monday. The quakes ranged from magnitude 1.5 to magnitude 2.5 and occurred between 5:30 pm and 11:30 pm.

Trembles aren’t out of the ordinary near the active volcano with magma movement underground. But, as we all know, earthquakes can be a precursor to a volcanic eruption.

Scientists have been warning locals of the possibility of an eruption for some time now. National Geographic released an article highlighting the ten most dangerous volcanoes in America – Lassen Peak, Mt. Shasta, Crater Lake and South Sister Volcano in Oregon were all listed. They were deemed a “volatile cluster.”

In 2018, the U.S. Geological Survey released its list of the most hazardous volcanoes in the country, with Mount Shasta ranking fifth out of the list’s 18 “very high threat volcanoes.”

“It has had young eruptions by geologic standards, and we know there is magma in its plumbing system,” Jessica Ball, a volcanologist at the U.S. Geological Survey’s California Volcano Observatory, said to Scientific American.

Mount Shasta is a particularly dangerous threat due to its proximity to thousands of homes, including Yreka, Weed, Mt. Shasta City, McCloud and Dunsmuir.
