Over the weekend, the National Weather Service reported that winds at the South Lake Tahoe reached 60 miles per hour, creating waves in an otherwise calm Lake Tahoe. Naturally, local surfers took advantage of the situation.

Surfers were seen slashing waves in the lake this past weekend, and KTVU was able to catch this video:

While surfing in Lake Tahoe is rare, it’s certainly not a new phenomenon. Wind in Tahoe typically picks up in the fall months, usually September, and creates big waves on the lake. Of course, anybody who wants to experience the swells at 6,200 feet must stay prepared for windy weather, but we have photos and video to proves it’s not a fluke:

If you’re going to surf Lake Tahoe, just make sure it bring a wetsuit. It’s cold out there!
