Town of Grizzly Flats Destroyed in the Caldor Fire

The Caldor Fire erupted over the weekend in El Dorado County and due to extreme fire conditions, it quickly grew to 65,474 acres with no containment. The fire, which is forcing evacuations along Highway 50 between Placerville and South Lake Tahoe, ripped through the town of Grizzly Flats with at least 50 homes burned.

CalFire officials confirmed that little remains in the small community of Grizzly Flats, including the destruction of the local post office and Walt Tyler Elementary School. Current reports show the neighborhoods in the Forest View Drive and Grizzly Flats Road were reduced to ash. Two people were seriously injured in the fire, with both rushed to the hospital and currently recovering.

“We know this fire has done things that nobody could have predicted, but that’s how firefighting has been in the state this year,” El Dorado National Forest Supervisor Chief Jeff Marsolais said at a briefing Wednesday.

As of Thursday morning, 12,000 residents in El Dorado and Amador counties remain under evacuation order or warning, with 7,000 structures currently threatened. Towns of Kyburz and Pollock Pines remain on high alert as a shift in wind could bring the flames into the more populated areas. The El Dorado National Forest remains closed to all visitors as firefighters continue to battle the flames in the deep forests of the Sierra Nevada.
