NorCal Storm Update: I-80 Reopens, Dangerous Travel Conditions Remain

On Sunday, multiple spin outs and whiteout conditions forced officials to close Interstate 80 for nearly 70 miles in the Tahoe area. The closure, from Colfax to the Nevada, lasted approximately 17 hours, leaving travelers stranded in the area.

On Monday at 7 am, the road was reopened to through traffic.

Dangerous winter driving conditions and chain controls still remain on the popular highway from Sacramento to Reno, with large accumulations of snow across Donner Summit. Plan for chain controls, delays and winter driving conditions.

As of Monday morning, the scene near Kingvale looked much more manageable for motorists:

But as you head up the mountain towards Donner Summit, the road conditions worsened significantly:

As you can imagine, all of the traffic was heading westbound, likely people trapped in the Reno/Tahoe area overnight due to the road closures.
