Slater Fire Destroys 150 Homes in the Happy Camp Area

Another devastating wildfire is burning in Northern California, which has destroyed approximately 150 homes in the Happy Camp area of Siskiyou County and has grown to 40,000 acres, according to the Siskiyou County Sheriff. The fire has now moved across the Oregon border with no containment.

The fire started on the night of September 7 and was pushed by the heavy winds that persisted overnight on September 8. An evacuation order was issued for the town of Happy Camp as well as various roads adjacent to Happy Camp. Currently Highway 96 is closed from Fort Goff on the northeast side of Happy Camp and to Clear Creek on the southwest side. The Grayback Road is closed from Happy Camp northwest to Oregon. The community of Gasket, California has also been ordered to evacuate.
