Our Favorite Ski Runs: Sierra-at-Tahoe’s Huckleberry Canyon

As the winter descends on Northern California, it’s time to start planning your trips up to the mountain for a ski adventure. One of the most underrated ski resorts in the country is Sierra-at-Tahoe, near South Lake Tahoe. Sitting at the top of the Highway 50 summit is this pristine mountain full of incredible terrain for all skill sets.

While there are a ton of great powder tree runs jam packed into this mountain, the truly advanced riders head over to Huckleberry Canyon on powder days. Huckleberry Canyon is 320 acres of backcountry heaven accessed by 5 backcountry gates at the summit of Sierra at-Tahoe. The terrain is ungroomed and avalanche controlled, allowing true experts to have an incredible backcountry experience.

When you take the Grandview Express to the top of the mountain, you will see most of the main runs going to the left as you look down the mountain. That’s when you head right. Ski patrol will open certain sections of the area depending on the snow coverage, so stay right and read the signage as to what’s open and closed.

Although this area is within the boundaries of the resort, you must treat it as you are in the true backcountry. There are still avalanches:

When the snow is perfect, every year Sierra-at-Tahoe hosts the Annual Huck Cup, a Swatch Freeride World Qualifying event in the Freeride World Tour. This is where local and visiting riders show off their backcountry savvy in a competition format:

This is truly one of the most amazing places you’ll ever ski on a good powder day. Guaranteed!
