Lassen’s Manzanita Creek Trail Temporarily Closed Due to Bear Activity

Lassen Volcanic National Park announced Thursday that it has temporarily closed Manzanita Creek Trail due to bear activity. The bear has been frequenting a deer carcass along the trail and the area has deemed it unsafe for hikers.

We will update the article when the park has deemed it safe to return to the area.

Lassen is home to about 30 black bears. Despite what their name implies, black bear fur can vary from blonde to black in color. These adaptable animals live in the park year-round, however they enter torpor–a short-term form of hibernation–in the snowy winter months.

During spring and early summer, the beautiful bears awake looking for food after a long winter.
