Fishing Guide Lands 3-Foot Wild Steelhead on the Smith River

The rivers of California’s North Coast are starting to see some trophy steelhead running through the system. Fishing guides throughout Northern California have been boasting large catches with the elusive fish. One recent catch on the Smith River stands out as one of the best of 2021.

Fishing guide Mario Gomez chased a massive steelhead on the Smith before landing the wild hen, which boasted 36 inches and around 17 pounds. He detailed the battle on his Instagram page:

“Today was one of those days that don’t come along very often,” Gomez wrote on social media. “We landed a trophy wild hen that took us down a back channel that no one should probably take a boat down, but we chased it, through the willows, over trees, into a log jam, and ended up in a big boil. I don’t know how we got this fish in the net but we did.”

“You’re probably not going to believe this but right before we hooked this fish we lost one in the same hole that made this fish look mediocre.”

Great catch, Mario! If you want to book a trip to catch a steelhead like this, go to ironheadguideservice.com.
