A CHP helicopter crew that rescued a stranded swimmer at the popular Emerald Pools near Truckee last year is receiving an award for the rescue.

On the Yuba River sits the Emerald Pools, where a swimmer was stranded on a rock during high flows near a 45-foot waterfall. To maximize safety during the rescue, Truckee Firefighter Dave Fichter accompanied the Billy Pugh rescue device on the hoist.

The helicopter hovered in position while Firefighter Fichter placed the swimmer into the rescue device. The crew then transported the swimmer to Bear Valley where he was tended to by additional medical personnel.
