Abandoned Bear Cubs Found in Far NorCal Spark Poaching Investigation

Earlier this month, two small bear cubs were found along Highway 96 just outside Yreka. The cubs were moved to the Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care to care for them and raise them into fully-formed juvenile bears.

With the protective nature of mother bears, it was a rare sight to find such young cubs alone. And now the California Department of Fish and Wildlife have evidence that poaching was part of the incident and are asking the public to assist in bringing to the poachers to justice.

“We’re asking for the public’s help and information on two small bear cubs found earlier this month along Highway 96 in Siskiyou County,” California DFW wrote on Twitter. “Wildlife officers believe one or more persons may be responsible for separating the young bears from their mother.”
